fathom (2008)

For Fathom, I mined the subterranean underbelly of the YBCA's grounds, including mechanical and electrical rooms, for sound and vibrational recordings. The installation evokes both the literal and conceptual foundation beneath us as these abstracted sounds resurface in unison with flares of light emanating from the seams of the floorboards of a room streaked with rust. Subsonic vibrations underfoot contribute to the feeling that the structure itself may not only contain certain energies, but that it may also have a pulse of its own.

Fathom is part of Bay Area Now 5, a trienniel survey of Bay Area Art at YBCA.
